Access Point Configuration Example - Netgear WG602

WG602 Security Options - Click to EnlargeOnce the access point has saved and applied your changes to its Wireless Settings click on Security Settings in the menu on the left hand side under Setup. On the security Settings page there are no configuration options until you select what type of security you use which is done by selecting your chosen method of encryption in the Security Type drop down menu. Your choices are -

  • WEP
  • WPA-PSK
  • WPA2-PSK
  • WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
More information on the different types of encryption can be found in our basic networking guide under Wireless Security

WG602 WEP Encryption - Click to EnlargeUsing WEP Encryption - Using WEP to protect your wireless network is no longer recommended unless you have older equipment that does not support WPA or WPA2. It is possible to break 128 bit WEP encryption within 20 minutes however it will still keep passers-by and amateur hackers out of your network and is a much better option than no encryption at all. Select WEP as your security type. The best setting for authentication type for beginners is Open System or Mix. The Encryption Strength on the WG602 can be either 64 or 128 bits, 128 bits is the preferred option here if all of your client computers and devices support it. Leave the Passphrase field blank if you are using an open system (recommended). Finally, the last detail we must supply is the WEP key itself. The primary key or key 1 on most devices is used for traffic in both directions, the other three keys can only be used to decrypt received data. Make sure that Key 1 has the dot in the circle so that it is the primary key and type your key into the appropriate field. If you are using 64 bit WEP the key must be ten charactors long and 128 bit WEP requires a key 26 charactors long. The key must be hexadecimal, that is that it must only contain numbers 0-9 and letters A-F. Once you have entered your key WRITE it down exactly as you typed it into the access point. This key will now be required by any computer or device that will join your wireless network. Without it they will not connect succesfully, after all, thats what securing the network is all about. Once you have entered the key and made a note of what it is click apply. The access point will save the new settings and apply them. If you connected wirelessly to configure the WG602 this is where it will disconnect you and refuse your connection until you enter the WEP key into your computers settings.

WG602 WPA Encryption - Click to EnlargeUsing WPA Encryption - WPA or WPA2 with a preshared key (PSK) is the preferred type of encryption for wireless networks, with WPA2 being the better of the two choices if your computers or devices support it. Most devices including the WG602 allow you to select either WPA, WPA2 or both and the configuration screen for all three choices is virtually identical so we have elected to only depict the option to do both here. When both is selected the WG602 will run WPA2 and step down to WPA if a client that does not support WPA2 connects. So to configure the access point to do both select WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK as your Security Type and leave the Encryption Type as it is, TKIP and AES. Finally we must enter a Password Phrase, this must be between 8 and 63 charactors long and may contain any letter or number. A word or saying that you will find easy to remember may be convenient but the best Password Phrases are randomly arranged numbers and letters 62 charactors long. WRITE it down, every device or computer that connects to your wireless network will need it or they will not be able to connect. Once complete click apply. If you connected to the device wirelessly you will now be disconnected and will be unable to join the network until you have reconfigured to your wireless security settings.

WG602 change admin password - Click to EnlargeThe final step is to change the password on the access point from the default to something unique, to prevent unauthorised access to its configuration settings. In the routers configuration web interface click change password, which is located under management. Type your new password into the Set Password field and then enter it again exactly the same in the Repeat New Password field. Click Apply and the little box you type the password into will pop up again expecting you to type in the new password. We can now consider the WG602 to be configured and secure.
